Soil is basalt clay that cracks in summer and swells in winter, moving stumps and opening gaps at slab edges that termites use. On the brick veneer homes the inspector checks the weepholes, the level of paving and garden beds against the brick, and the laundry and bathroom floors where leaks collect. Interwar homes near the station commonly have low subfloors with original stumps, and the inspector needs to enter them to see anything useful. Kororoit Creek and its reserves lie to the west with plenty of remnant timber. Older sheds, chicken coops and garden sleepers in the back yard are often where activity is found first, and many yards here are large. Owners should keep the ground at the base of the house dry, clear vents and repair fences with rotted posts rather than propping them.
